Where will we go fishing?

Talkeetna is a small town located roughly 100 miles north of Anchorage. At Up North Fly Fishing we choose between several creeks and rivers outside of Talkeetna depending on the best conditions for that day. Our focus is to take you fishing in our best spots, away from other anglers, where freshwater fish and salmon thrive- creating a true Alaskan fly fish experience.

What species of fish does Up North Fly Fishing primarily target?

Many species of fish call the creeks and rivers of South-Central Alaska home. Up North primarily targets wild native rainbow trout however, depending on the location and time of year, we will chase and fish for what is in season. These species include: wild native rainbow trout, arctic grayling, dolly varden, pink salmon, chum salmon, sockeye salmon, silver salmon, wild steelhead and Northen Pike! There is no fishing for king salmon in the Susitna river drainage.

What if I’ve never fly fished before?

No worries! Having taught many guests over the years how to cast, we break casting down into a few basic steps to simplify the process. Don’t think that you must have a perfect 50 foot back cast in order to catch a fish. We fish with a short roll cast meaning less time back casting and more time with your line in the water. We look forward to teaching new fly fishing techniques to anglers from all around the world!

What makes Up North Fly Fishing stand apart from the other fishing outfits?

Up North prides itself by giving its guests the most authentic and best Alaskan fly fishing experience possible! We are passionate fishermen- happy to teach and share river time with all. We use high quality NRS self bailing rafts with hi back seats ensuring comfort and safety. We also fish a ton so we always have the fishing report dialed. This allows us to travel, fish, and guide all across the Mat-Su valley, even the state, providing different and unique experiences to all of our guests!
